How Much Does It Cost to Build a Coaching App in 2026?

Building a coaching app in 2026 costs anywhere from about $124 to more than $180,000, and the gap is entirely about who does the work. A custom agency build runs $35,000 to $180,000 or more. A platform charges a monthly fee instead. Every route still owes Apple and Google the same store floor.

I run Tribed, so I watch these quotes land in coaches' inboxes every week. Tribed is coaching infrastructure that gives a coach their own branded app: member accounts, programs delivered day by day, community, payments, App Store and Google Play distribution, and an AI author trained on that coach's method. We build the app and the coach pays once it is live. That model exists because the numbers below stop most coaches before they start.

What does a custom coaching app cost to build from scratch?

A custom coaching app costs $35,000 to $180,000 or more, depending on how much product you need. Cleveroad's estimate, updated in May 2026, puts a basic fitness or coaching app at $35,000 to $60,000, a mid-complexity build with personalized plans and wearable data at $60,000 to $100,000, and an advanced build with AI coaching and video at $100,000 to $180,000 or more.

Two details get lost inside those headline numbers. Building for iOS and Android together, rather than one platform, lands at $155,000 to $200,000 in the same 2026 estimate. And the estimate carries a separate line for ongoing support at $2,000 to $5,000 a month after launch, which no quote folds into the build price.

The timeline costs as much as the money does. Cleveroad's phase breakdown runs 2 to 3 weeks of workshop, 3 to 4 weeks of discovery, 3 to 5 weeks of design, 8 to 16 weeks of development, and 2 to 4 weeks of testing. That is four to seven months before one client opens the app, and coaching businesses change shape in four months.

What is the floor? The store fees you pay no matter what

The unavoidable cost of publishing a coaching app in 2026 is $124 in year one: $99 a year for the Apple Developer Program plus a one-time $25 registration for Google Play. Apple lists the membership at 99 USD per membership year. Google states a US$25 one-time registration fee. Everything above that is a choice.

Then there is commission on every subscription sold inside the app. Apple's App Store Small Business Program cuts the standard rate to 15% for developers who made up to 1 million USD in proceeds in the prior calendar year, which covers essentially every coach reading this. You have to apply for it. Coaches who never apply pay the standard rate on every renewal, and that is a bigger number over a year than the build savings they were chasing.

Who owns the developer account, and why that is a cost too

The account your app ships from decides what your app is worth later, so it belongs in the budget. If a platform publishes your app inside its own Apple Developer account, the listing, the ratings and the install base sit in that account, not yours. Leaving means a new listing, zero reviews, and asking every member to download a different app.

The $99 is trivial. The switching bill is not, and it never appears at signup. So ask any platform one question before you pay them anything: whose Apple Developer account will my app live in? I wrote the full version of that test in what a white-label coaching app actually is.

What does a platform cost instead?

Platforms swap the build cost for a subscription, and the branded app almost always sits on the top tier. Prices checked this week:

  • Kajabi: Basic at $179 a month, Growth at $249, Pro at $499, with the branded mobile app on the Pro tier.
  • ABC Trainerize: Grow at $9 a month for 2 clients, Pro from $23 a month, Studio Plus at $248 a month, with a custom branded app as a one-time $169 setup fee on Pro and included on Studio.

Those are fair prices, and for plenty of coaches a platform is the right answer. If you sell a content library and a checkout and nothing more, a course platform is cheaper and faster than anything custom, and I say so plainly in the platform comparison. What you are buying at that price is a template that every other expert on the platform is also using.

What is the cost nobody puts in the estimate?

The real cost of a coaching app is the work after launch, and it is the line item no quote contains. An app that ships and then sits there earns almost nothing. RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps 2026 puts the cross-category median at about $72 a month one year after launch. In the same 2026 data, 17.3% of new apps reach $1,000 in monthly revenue within two years and 4.6% reach $10,000.

Those numbers are not an argument against launching. They describe what happens when nobody works on the app after the invoice clears. The distance between the median and that 4.6% is paywall testing, onboarding changes, push and email timing, pricing experiments, and content that keeps arriving every week. I listed the nine systems a subscription app needs before it can make money in this breakdown, and none of them appear in an agency statement of work.

I learned this on my own tools before Tribed existed. When I cancelled $340 a month of SaaS and built replacements, the build was the cheap half and maintenance was the bill I had not budgeted for. The real numbers are in build vs buy.

So how much should a coach actually budget?

Budget for the path, not for the app. Three honest scenarios for 2026:

  1. Course platform, $179 to $499 a month. Right when you sell a content library and want it live this month. You get a template, a checkout, and speed.
  2. Custom agency build, $35,000 to $180,000 plus $2,000 to $5,000 a month. Right when your method needs something no platform does, and you have the capital and four to seven months to spend.
  3. Infrastructure partner, a monthly fee and no build cost. Right when you want your own app in both stores under your name without the capital outlay, and you want someone still working on it in month six. That is what we do at Tribed: we build it, you pay once it is live, and 140 plus expert-led communities run on it today.

Price is rarely what decides this. The real question is whether an app is the right move for your business at all, and that comes down to how large your audience is and how often your members need you. The revenue math by follower count is in the benchmarks piece.

FAQ

Can I build a coaching app for free?

No. The floor is $124 in year one: $99 for the Apple Developer Program and $25 once for Google Play. Some partners, Tribed included, build the app at no cost and charge only once it is live in the stores.

How long does it take to build a coaching app?

A custom agency build takes four to seven months across workshop, discovery, design, development and testing, per Cleveroad's 2026 phase estimate. Platform and partner routes launch in weeks because the product already exists.

Do I need both an iOS and an Android app?

Most coaches do, because members are split across both. In custom development that roughly doubles the bill, from $95,000 to $130,000 for one platform to $155,000 to $200,000 for both, per Cleveroad in 2026.

What commission do Apple and Google take on app subscriptions?

Apple's Small Business Program charges 15% on in-app purchases for developers with up to $1 million in proceeds in the prior calendar year. You have to apply for it, and the standard rate is higher.

Is a coaching app cheaper than a course platform plus a community tool?

Not always cheaper, but usually fewer bills. Coaches typically replace a course platform, a community tool, a scheduler and a payments layer, and end up paying one bill instead of four or five.

What is the most expensive mistake in a coaching app budget?

Budgeting the build and not the year after it. Ongoing support alone runs $2,000 to $5,000 a month in 2026 agency estimates, and growth work like paywall and pricing tests is a separate cost again.
